See All The Best Looks From 2017 Afro Punk

The fashion-forward outpost is a street-style mecca.

ICYMI: This weekend, it was #BlackGirlMagic x #BlackBoyJoy central at Brooklyn’s annual AfroPunk Festival at Commodore Barry Park.

In between jamming to sets by Solange, SZA, Willow Smith and Sampha, attendees were serving up major style and fashion.

We caught up with Jessica Franklin, a.k.a. @HeyGorgJess, (who partnered with NYC & Company) to hear about what makes the borough special — and to see all of the head-turning looks that popped up.

“The first day I wore floral, flowy pants with a crop top and Converse,” shares Jessica. “The second day I wore an adorable printed two-piece set made by the @Dpipertwins, who are two beautiful Black women based here in NYC.”

It’s no surprise AfroPunk is a hotbed for style street. The dress code is anything goes, which allows everyone to express their personality and unique POV.

“I used to feel pressure to create outfits that would get photographed, but then I stopped worrying about that. Now I'm focused on wearing things I truly liked and enjoy wearing,” Jess reveals. But from the looks of her IG, it looks like she nailed it.

“There is a definitely a fine line between ‘festival style’ and cultural appropriation,” adds Jess. “I think the best way to tell the difference between the two is whether someone is wearing something just to be trendy and get attention — or if their intentions are truly to represent the culture.”

She also caught up with a few attendees about what they love the most about Brooklyn. Peep below for a few highlights:

When we asked Jess what made AfroPunk a summer-must, she said, "its infusions of culture, art and music to help make it what it is today."

“My highlight of the weekend was seeing SZA and Solange perform!” she shares. “I am a big fan and I’ve listened to both of their albums a bunch of times, so it was really fun to hear to sing along with them in person.”

If you missed the festivities, you can hit up one of the following dates in Atlanta, Paris, London, or even Johannesburg.
