Dascha Polanco Calls Out Beauty and Fashion Brands for Declaring Her Unmarketable

"The Orange Is the New Black" actress claps back at the industry's rejection.

Though Dascha Polanco has broken into the mainstream thanks to her role as Daya on Orange Is the New Black, the fashion world hasn't been as quick to embrace her as say, other Netflix stars. Take Millie Bobby Brown, for example. The young teen's role in Stranger Things brought her quick acclaim, front row seats at fashion shows and campaigns nearly instantaneously. Polanco, however, has yet to receive deals that match her demonstrated artistic ability.

“I can see the steps of when they’re going towards rejection. You can tell when they’re dodging your phone calls and you know when they’re not going to email you back. Before, I used to personalize it but now I can see right through them, and it’s better for me mentally to just realize that they haven’t gotten with the program and start to think of ways to create my own things and capitalize on these rejections," she said. "But we have to see more inclusion in magazines, ads, everything. It was cool to see what Lane Bryant did with Gabourey Sidibe but what about other brands? It’s about having equal opportunities for everyone. It’s not to discourage their Kate Moss; it’s to have a Kate Moss, a Tyra Banks and curvy models included and not separate.”

Polanco shows that she's plenty marketable in this gorgeous editorial for New York Magazine, which will be included in its spring fashion issue. Hopefully, by speaking on the issue, brands will start piling up to sign her — as they should.
