UFC Suspends Jon Jones, Strips Him of Light Heavyweight Title

The star fighter is facing felony charges for hit-and-run accident.

The UFC is taking Jon Jones's hit-and-run incident very seriously.

On Tuesday, the UFC stripped Jones of his light heavyweight title and suspended him indefinitely. The decision came one day after Jones turned himself into the Albuquerque Police Department

"He's very disappointed. He's upset. He wanted to go down as one of the greats or the greatest," UFC president Dana White said on Fox Sports Live of Jones, as reported by ESPN. "He's disappointed, but it is what it is. It is the decision we had to make. For us to go in and have to strip him of his title and suspend him is not fun, but you know what they say—the show must go on."

Jones, who was released on bond, tweeted his apology on Tuesday as well, admitting he needs to improve his life.

"Got a lot of soul searching to do," the 27-year-old Jones said. "Sorry to everyone I've let down."

Jones faces a felony charge of leaving the scene of a crime, which can potentially carry jail time. In the early Sunday accident, Jones allegedly struck the vehicle of a 25-year-old pregnant woman, breaking her arm. He reportedly fled his vehcile on foot, police later found marijuana and a marijuana pipe in Jones's car.

This past January, Jones checked himself in to rehab for drug treatment.

Jones was scheduled to face Anthony Johnson on May 23rd in Las Vegas. Instead, Daniel Cormier will take Jones's spot to contend for the now-vacant light heavyweight championship.
