Where Are They Now? The Cast of 'Rosewood'

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the film's release.

The historical drama Rosewood quickly became one of the most iconic dramatizations of a 1923 racist lynch mob upon its 1997 release. Starring the likes of Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, Jon Voight, Elise Neal and more and directed by the incredible John Singleton, the film stands as a must-watch for many. On its 20th anniversary, we take a look back at where the cast is in present day.

    Ving Rhames played the lead role of Mann in the film — a World War I vet who was scouting out land to purchase before making his way to the town of Rosewood. Since the film's 1997 release, Rhames's career has continued to prosper, with him landing roles in other high profile projects including Mission Impossible II, Baby Boy, Dawn of the Dead and, more recently, A Sunday Horse, released in 2016. Rhames is currently set to star in three upcoming films: The Star, Bastards and Minkow, all set for 2017 releases.

    Don Cheadle played the role of Sylvester Carrier, a resident who witnessed and was a victim of the riots during that time. Since then, the actor has gone on to become one of the most celebrated names in Hollywood, starring in blockbusters like Mission to Mars, Swordfish, Crash, Hotel Rwanda and Iron Man 2 and 3. The actor also dominated on the TV front, starring in the popular series House of Lies from 2012 to 2016. He was nominated for an Oscar for his leading role in Hotel Rwanda in 2005 and won a Golden Globe in both 1999 and 2013 for his performances in The Rat Pack and House of Lies, respectively.

    Jon Voight played a sympathetic white store owner who resided in a village near Rosewood. The actor had an already eventful career prior to the film's release and the success just kept rolling in afterward. He went on to star in the likes of Zoolander, Ali, Transformers and, most recently, the TV series Ray Donovan. He is set to star in two films set to be released later this year: Riley's Peak and Same Kind of Different as Me.

  • Esther Rolle as Aunt Sarah

    Rolle played Aunt Sarah, the matriarch of an upwardly mobile Black family in the film and the mother to Cheadle's character. Following the release of Rosewood, Rolle starred in a few films and TV series, including Touched by an Angel and Down in the Delta, before her death a year later in 1998.

    Neal played Beulah "Scrappie" Carrier, Sylvester's younger sister in the film who eventually fell in love with Rhames's character. After Rosewood, she starred in a few popular films like Scream 2, Mission to Mars, Hustle & Flow and the popular TV series The Hughleys and All of Us. She continued working throughout the years but decided to join the cast of the TV One reality series Hollywood Divas in 2014. Neal is set to star in the upcoming film Logan and has several other projects in the works, including What Are the Chances?, Tragedy Girls and The White Sistas.

  • Bridgid Coulter as Gertrude

    After starring as Gertrude in Rosewood, Bridgid Coulter's acting career has been a bit spotty. The actress landed a few guest roles on popular TV shows, including Shameless, House of Lies, Rizzoli & Isles and, most recently, Westworld, but hasn't played a lead role in some time. She is set to star in a short titled The Green Bench, which was filmed back in 2015. It is yet to be released.

  • Robert Patrick as Fanny's lover

    Patrick played the abusive lover to Fanny in the film. Following his not-so-beloved role, the actor's career took to new heights as he went on to star in the several projects, including Ambushed, The Sopranos, The X-Files, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, Walk the Line and several other high profile projects in both TV and film. Currently, he is starring in the series Scorpion and is set to star in the film Last Rampage, due to hit theaters later this year.

  • Michael Rooker as Sheriff Walker

    Rooker played Sheriff Walker, who took James Carrier (played by Paul Benjamin) into custody in the film. After the success of Rosewood, Rooker never stopped working. He starred in films and TV shows, including Thief and Archer, among others, but it was his role in the first season of The Walking Dead that made him known to the current generation. He went on to also star in Guardians of the Galaxy and The Belko Experiement in 2014 and 2016, respectively. He is set to reprise his role from Guardians in its second installment in 2017.

  • Catherine Kellner as Fanny Taylor

    Kellner played the wife of James Taylor (played by Loren Dean), who Aunt Sarah served as a housekeeper in a town near Rosewood. Kellner went on to star in several shorts following the film's release, including Carnival Sun, D.C. Smalls, Self Storage and Woman in Burka. Her last role was Alex in the 2015 film Sweets.

    Busia palyed Jewel, the Black woman whom Voight's character was having an affair with in the film. Following Rosewood, Busia's acting career slowed down. She starred in a few projects, including Mad City and ER, in the two years following the film's release, with 2007's Ascention Day being her last role to date.

    The 1997 film was directed by the revered John Singleton, who was praised for the film, with many critics citing it his best work since Boyz n the Hood at the time. Following Rosewood, Singleton went on to direct several other celebrated works, including Shaft, Baby Boy, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Four Brothers. On the TV front, he also directed episodes for award-winning series like Empire, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story and Billions. He has currently directed and produced upcoming episodes of the series Rebel and Snowfall.
