Nelson Mandela-Inspired Clothing Line to Make Runway Debut

The new brand, 46664 Apparel, will show at South Africa Fashion Week this weekend.

A clothing line that honors humanitarian and former South African president Nelson Mandela’s legacy will make its runway debut this Sunday (September 25) in Johannesburg during South African Fashion Week.

The brand, 46664 Apparel, takes its name after the prison number Mandela was assigned during his 27 years of imprisonment at Robben Island, beginning in 1964. 4664 Apparel refers to itself as “South Africa’s only clothing with a conscience” and, according to Women's Wear Daily, their intention is to become South Africa's first "global apparel brand," boosting the country's ailing clothing industry by manufacturing locally and sustainably.

The retail line was launched in August, showcasing its Spring-Summer range at Stuttafords and features well-tailored, classic women’s and men’s sportswear with African influences seen in colors, prints and accents. 46664 will reportedly stock in 15 Stuttafords nationwide, as well as 70 independent retailers, launching online in mid-November and rolling out internationally next year.

Stella McCartney is rumored to be the first guest designer for the brand and it would be no surprise if Naomi Campbell attaches her name to the brand (or even takes to the catwalk) as well.
