'The Breakfast Club' Recap: TI Talks Trap Music Turning 20
Charlamagne tha God and DJ Envy talked Hip Hop 50, politics and more this week with an array of guests and guest hosts.
On Monday, they discussed Souljah Boy’s frustration with how Hip Hop 50 has been celebrated this far and how he feels left out of the conversation and tweeted:
“When I came in the game they say I killed hip hop, but really, I birthed a new wave of hip hop with streaming ahead of my time. Now everyone uploads their music to the internet. Now everyone goes live for their fans. I started that, thank me or not.”
Souljah Boy made a good point, and Charlamagne pointed out that this is a good example of why getting your story out into the world is important. TI also stopped by to remind millennials that they’re old because trap music is 20. What a time for those who were there.
“It feels like a lot of hard work paid off,” said TI. “And also, a lot of lessons and stories were shared by a lot of people. You have to be relatable to sustain for so long. I’m just happy to be able to speak for people who need to be spoken for.”
Ben Crump stopped by with the founders of the Fearless Fund, an organization that helps Black women entrepreneurs, who make up less than 1% of business owners who get funding, raise money. The Fearless Fund is working to close the wealth gap and is being sued for it. Edward Blum, the same man responsible for dismantling affirmative action, is coming for the Atlanta-based organization.
Boxer Jermell Charlo stopped by on Wednesday to talk about being stripped of the WBO belt and his fight with Canelo. Larry Elder came by on Thursday to try to convince people that he isn’t anti-black, and finally, the week wound down on a bright note. Beanie Man was caught entertaining people on a flight to the Bahamas by singing a medley of his hits on the aisle
