How ‘One Margarita’ Became The Drinking Song Of The Summer
That Chick Angel was living life as an actress on HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” hosting multiple podcasts, including one with her husband alongside friends like popular social media influencer KevOnStage and being a mother of four children. Meanwhile, producer team Steve Terrell and Casi Di were making viral social media hits including transforming Beyoncé’s “I'm Going to see my Husband” clip into the song “Bombastic Side Eye.”
A hilarious freestyle That Chick Angel rhymed on an episode of “Here’s The Thing with KevOnStage” with the lyrics “Give me one margarita, I'ma open my legs, Give me two margaritas, I'ma give you some head, Give me three margaritas, I'ma put it in my p-ssy. Give me four margaritas, I'ma put it in my tus,” inspired Steve Terrell and Casi Di to do something more.
The end result, “One Margarita,” became one of the summer’s biggest anthems and led to a remix featuring current LGBTQ+ rap star Saucy Santana. As an added cherry on top, supermodel icon Cindy Crawford also appears in the remix video parodying her classic Pepsi commercial.
Speaking with BET.com, the crew behind “One Margarita” gives the skinny behind the single’s success and their future as a trio.
BET.com: Looking back, was rapping on that level where you have a deal and expensive videos even a consideration before “One Margarita?”
That Chick Angel: Because I have always been comedic, I don’t take what I do seriously. My friends will tell you if I have a couple of drinks, a freestyle is going to happen. I’m about to be MC Halo. In the past, I’ve been hired to write comedy or parody raps. So as a lyricist and someone who writes raps, I’ve done that and been paid for it.
As far as somebody thinking that something I write would be on people’s charts and Spotify playlists, I didn’t see that in the cards for me. I guess I don’t want to say ignorance, but kind of putting myself in a box. I didn’t see myself as someone considered as a rapper. I am not to say that anybody can’t or can be a rapper but I’m a mom of four boys and a wife. I’m a little Leave it to Beaver-ish in my own eyes. I don’t feel like I fit with the Cardi B(s), Sexyy Red(s) of the world.
BET.com: Do you remember the moment of making “One Margarita?”
That Chick Angel: After I did the freestyle on my podcast with KevonStage called Here’s The Thing, I knew that soundbite would do it. I put it on my TikTok, knowing somebody would put a beat behind it. I didn’t put it on there, knowing that someone would put a beat behind it with the intention or desire to make it into a full song. I knew somebody would because that’s just the time and day we’re in. People here have a really good sound bite and that if they are good at what they do, they’ll produce a beat and throw it underneath the soundbite. I was more surprised at how fast Steve and Casa Di were able to move. It was literally the next day right Steve?
Steve Terrell: It was the very next day.
That Chick Angel: The next day, they put it up, and people were loving it. They did a great job, and I thought that would be the end. Then I get a DM from Casa Di and Steve.
Steve Terrell: Once we put the beat under it and posted it, we got reactions from a lot of people on TikTok like it was the song of the summer. They asked us where they could find it on Spotify. They wanted it to be a full song. So, the first thing we wanted to do is reach out to Angel to make sure she would be okay with us putting it on streaming services. We sequenced the beat, mapped it out and it was literally within 48 hours after the freestyle we made contact with Angel and had it up ready to go.
BET.com: What was the fine-tuning aspect for you considering there’s a whole verse you added?
That Chick Angel: I wrote a verse to it. I was skeptical at first because I was aware of their work. Everybody had heard the Beyoncé song as it was everywhere. I didn’t know them outside of that. I’m not about to get scammed. Ain’t nobody about to take advantage of me. I was a little skeptical at first, so I prayed about it, and I was like go ahead and write a verse, Angel. When I wrote it, I contacted them the next day just to get a vibe for them so we all met on Zoom and they were nice, genuine people. I didn’t get the ‘girl you about to lose your house fooling with these people’ feeling.
In that meeting, they were like do you think you can write another verse to this. That’s when I told them I already had. They took the verse and elongated the song. They sent me the track elongated with the space for me to throw my verse in. I recorded it literally in the chair that I’m sitting in right now in my house. They put more magic on it and put it up to where we are today. It’s a song streamed over 10 million times which is just crazy.
BET.com How do you get Saucy Santana on the remix?
That Chick Angel: The three of us had been tossing around a lot of names of who we wanted on a remix. We were speaking to a lot of labels before the song even got as big as it is now. There were labels hitting us up left and right and both foreign and domestic. We all knew as a team that we wanted to be a remix and we wanted someone who has the respect and status in the music industry already. While I have been inside of music for a long time, I’m completely new. So we wanted somebody to give us validation to the song and not just it being a TikTok song. We had Saucy Santana in mind in regard to people we tossed around. When we met our label Giant Music, that was the first name they threw at us as well.
Like we’ve said in many interviews, we’ve seen how the LGBTQ+ community has gravitated to this song and we didn’t want to shy away from that. We’ve seen everyone gravitate to it from grannies talking about giving head to white sorority girls talking about they going to open their legs. But, we also saw that the queer community loved the song. Saucy is so prolific in his own right. I know growing up, there were no openly gay rappers that I could name to you who were mainstream. We respect what he has accomplished in his career.
After the label linked us up with him over Zoom, he just talked about how fun he thought the song was and how it was the mood of the. We all were just trying to turn up and have fun. I think he had his verse in a day or two after talking with him. He took the song up a notch by being a part of it.
BET.com: Getting Cindy Crawford in the remix video took things even higher.
That Chick Angel: It’s divine. The label told us they had connections with Casamigos. They played the company the song and they loved it. So they wanted to do product placement in the music video because music videos cost money. Then, Cindy Crawford’s husband, Rande Gerber, is one of the original owners of Casamigos alongside George Clooney. I don’t know who talked to who, but Cindy hadn’t heard the song or about any of us. Once she heard the song, she thought it was so much fun. She watched some of my videos and thought I was funny. Then she asked her kids if she should do the video and they’re in their twenties. Thank God the kids loved the song.
Cindy was so gracious and then to remake the classic Pepsi commercial was an absolute dream. That idea came to mind of director Jake Wilson who also did the “Booty” video. What’s great is that he has a background in comedy which is great for me because the song is laughable.
BET.com: Will this lead to another single and eventual album?
That Chick Angel: I don’t think we can say much but “One Margarita” ain’t done. I know people are asking where do we go from here? There are more levels to this.
Casa Di: I would reach even more and say that if we do another “One Margarita” remix, I think it’ll be some familiar faces and I think just a different energy of what we’ve done already.
That Chick Angel: It’s definitely not over. Margaritas and Tequila are still being poured somewhere, honey. Somebody is drinking. Hopefully, there’ll be many more voices that you have heard before and many more audiences that we specifically target to let them know that we appreciate them for running these numbers up on these streams.
