Eminem and Wiz Khalifa Canceled After Stage Collapse
Five days after winds ripped through a stage at the Indiana State Fair on August 13, killing five people, Reuters reports the tragedy struck once again. But it didn't occur in the United States—this time, it happened in Belgium.
The news site says a fast-moving storm hit the Pukkelpop Pop festival where Eminem, 38, Wiz Khalifa, 23, D12 and others were scheduled to perform. Yesterday was the jump-off for the three-day event.
Officials tell Reuters that strong winds and rain smashed tents, tore up trees, ripped the roof off a stage and toppled screens where about 65,000 people mingled while waiting for the music. Three people are dead and about 40 were injured.
Translated from Belgian on the festival’s website, the organizers explain that the show cannot go on because “Pukkelpop is in deep mourning. We feel much sympathy to the families and friends of the victims … Therefore, we decided to Pukkelpop 2011 for the rest of the weekend to stop.”
Our translation, in English? They cannot continue in good conscience. Hopefully these tragedies will push organizers to use stronger, weatherproof structures for all outdoor shows in the future.
