Michelle Obama Announces Africa Trip To Promote Youth Leadership
First Lady Michelle Obama's commitment to the health and well-being of America's youth is well-known. She has been very outspoken in encouraging young people to live healthier lives through smart eating and exercise. Now she's bringing her encouraging message abroad to Africa, and she will be announcing all the details Thursday on 106 & Park.
The First Lady will be traveling to South Africa and Botswana later this month and she'll be bringing her daughters Malia and Sasha along with her. During a series of events in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Gaborone, Mrs. Obama will speak to the youth in those cities about healthy lifestyles, the importance of getting an education and stepping up as a leaders in their communities.
As noted in a recent White House news release, the United States has an important stake in the success of Africa's many nations. For instance, 30,000 African students study in American schools, colleges, and universities each year, and 10,000 American students travel to Africa to study. "Africa's future will be shaped by its growing and dynamic youth population," the statement said. "Building stronger and more enduring relationships with Africa's emerging young leaders, tapping the strength and potential of African women, and investing in the health and well being of its children upholds core American values and advances American interests."
