Though Kanye West's polarizing and idiotic comments regarding slavery, among other things, are now a thing of the past, they remain etched in the minds of many. 

Because of this, and due to the relevancy of the topic as it relates to the popular overarching theme of Netflix's hit series Dear White People, we asked the show's creator and director, Justin Simien, to share his thoughts, and he did not hold back one bit.

Getting straight to the point, Simien, who often shows through his work and various interviews, that he is well-versed on the topic of Black identity, labeled the rapper as "disorienting."

"There really aren't queer voices in hip hop," he shared. "He was kind of as close as I had as a little boy because he was saying something that was different. He was talking about his insecurities, and, for a lot of us, no matter what spectrum of Black you are, I think he was a part of our self-concept as Black people. I think he helped us figure out who we were, so to hear him say these things is very disorienting."

Redirecting the conversation to the show, he explained that volume two of the series tackles this subject head on.

"I also think it's important, because, in this season, we get into some of that stuff," he added. "We get into that model minority syndrome where you feel like you do have to adopt some of these things from so-called white supremacy in order to get ahead, in order to feel like you're a free-thinker, and I think we do that without condemning anybody, because I do think it's a symptom of a larger problem."

He, however, ended his response with this sentiment that many seem to agree with.

"But I also think, ultimately, it is a bit of a distraction," he said with a chuckle. "The timing of all of this is quite perfect."
