A New York City police sergeant recently had her badge and gun confiscated in connection to the 2014 chokehold murder of Eric Garner.

According to the L.A. Times, NYPD Sgt. Kizzy Adonis has been placed on modified duty after four counts of "failure to supervise," an internal disciplinary sanction, were brought against her during an internal investigation. The Associated Press reports that it is just the first charge of wrongdoing in the case.

Adonis, who was not part of the team out investigating the day that Garner was killed, was one of the supervising officers at the scene of his death on Staten Island where he was arrested on suspicion of selling loose, untaxed cigarettes. Sgt. Adonis, an African-American woman, heard the radio call and responded to the scene from a nearby location.

Sgt. Ed Mullins, the head of Adonis' union, deemed the charge absurd and unjust: "She didn't have to go there — she chose to go there to help out and look what happens," he said before adding that Commissioner William Bratton is to blame, and not Adonis. "This incident stems from failed policies that ultimately led to the death of Eric Garner."
