Here's How Jay Z Served as LeBron James's Championship Motivation

Hov works in mysterious ways.

Many athletes in most sports use music as motivation or to help them get ready for a game. When it comes to LeBron James and the 2016 NBA season (particularly the Finals) he enlists an old friend to bump through his headphones.

Speaking with Sportscenter’s Scott Van Pelt after the Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Finals-clinching Game 7 victory last night (June 19) in Oakland, Bron Bron explained where he gets a lot of his motivation and what, among other things, really helped him get his team to accomplish the historic feat.

“I just always go back to the Jay Z song ‘A Star Is Born.'” he said. “You guys back in the studio go look it up, listen to it. I just always listen to that and I always stay true to the game. I know what I’m capable of, not only on the floor but also off the floor as well, with my leadership and what I bring to the table.”

“A Star Is Born,” featuring J. Cole, is from Hov’s 2009 album, The Blueprint 3, and contains many references to rappers Jay’s seen come up successfully through the years. One of the reasons it might appeal to LeBron is the fact that he does give props to other superstars around the NBA for their accomplishments and is friends with numerous superstars from other teams, like Dwayne Wade and Chris Paul.

The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Golden State Warriors, 93-89, in Game 7 of the NBA Finals Sunday night. They overcame a 3-1 series deficit to win a franchise first ring and the first championship for the city of Cleveland in 52 years.
