Friends of Oscar Grant Win Settlement Money From BART

Friends of Oscar Grant, who were with him the night he died, have won a $175,000 settlement for a civil rights lawsuit against the Bay Area Rapid Transit.

Friends of Oscar Grant, 22, who were with the Oakland man the night he was shot and killed, have won a $175,000 settlement from the Bay Area Rapid Transit.

This settles a federal civil rights lawsuit filed by the five men, who said BART detained them for no reason after the shooting.
Nigel and Jack Bryson, Michael Greer, Carlos Reyes and Fernando "June" Anicete stated in a suit they endured "several hours of being painfully handcuffed and/or mercilessly interrogated, all while mourning the demise of their childhood friend," according to the San Francisco Gate.
"This brings to an end a very traumatic and tragic event for these young men who witnessed their best friend being killed and who were subsequently arrested and taken to jail without just cause," attorney John Burris said to the SF Gate
Grant's mother and sister have received $2.8 million in settlement money, on behalf or Burris. Another lawsuit filed by Grant's father is still unsettled.
Grant was fatally shot at a subway stop by officer Johannes Mehserle on New Year's Day 2009. Mehserle served a two-year sentence and was released on parole on June 13, 2011.

In 2013, protesters who were arrested during demonstrations against the release of officer Mehserle in November 2010 won a $1 million settlement from the city of Oakland.
