Jesse Boykins III Calls Out Essence Over Love Letter Videos
Recording artist and writer Jesse Boykins III, known for his unique love letters to Black women, is calling out Essence magazine after their latest digital cover social rollout, featuring videos with their cover stars, Usher, Russell Wilson and Damson Idris, sensually writing and reciting love letters to Black women. His issue with the video is that it’s a little too close to his distinctive work.
While the refreshing and sexy social videos were viewed and embraced by millions, Boykins saw the creative concept and was immediately triggered. He’s claiming that Essence’s idea isn’t original as it looks like a few love letters to Black women videos he’s written, produced, and directed, starring Keith Powers and Joey Badass for the dating app Bumble.
“My creative IP is my livelihood, so I was a bit caught off guard when my homies sent me this [the Essence videos],” Boykins said in a video. He says he doesn’t make videos like this but wanted to shed light on this issue because a “lot of creators get their work blatantly copied all the time.”
Ever positive, Boykins shared that he’s glad more Black women get the love letters they deserve. But he admits it doesn’t have to play out like this. He gave the Black women publication the benefit of the doubt and said, “Maybe Essence didn’t see my videos.”
Maybe they didn’t.
