‘Dancing With The Stars’ Moves To Disney+ After 16 Years On ABC
The reality TV show Dancing with the Stars is getting ready to make a big move. Deadline reports that after 16 years on ABC, DWTS is relocating to Disney+ in the fall for Seasons 31 and 32 in a schedule shakeup.
“After over 30 seasons of the program on ABC, including two spin-offs, Dancing with the Stars will move off of ABC this fall in order for the Network to showcase several Monday Night Football games as well as develop and invest in new and future programming,” Deadline quoted an advisor the network sent Friday (April 8) to its affiliate stations.
The Wrap noted that the move comes after the once highly popular TV dance show has had sagging ratings. Season 30 sunk to a record low in the number of viewers who tuned in for the finale. Some are blaming host Tyra Banks who took over from Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews.
This move is great news for NFL fans. DWTS has occupied the Monday night primetime slot for more than a decade. Beginning in 2022, as part of ESPN’s Monday Night Football contract, ABC will only air an additional game that will expand to three games in 2023, according to Deadline.
Disney+ welcomes the addition to its lineup. It will be the platform’s first live series.
“The show’s broad appeal, as well as the overwhelming popularity of its Disney-themed competition nights, make Disney+ the perfect home for Dancing with the Stars while continuing to expand our demographic reach,” stated Kareem Daniel, chairman of Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution.
