Big Sean Reveals The Heart-Wrenching Reason He Took A Break From Music

"I had a lot of toxic relationships around me."

If you were wondering where Detroit emcee Big Sean had been hiding away for the past few months, look no further.

The Sean Don popped up on Instagram for his 31st birthday on Monday (March 25) with a message about his industry whereabouts as of late, and actually, he hasn’t been hiding at all. He’s just been taking rather quiet strides toward self-care, Sean revealed in the video, which required that he take a step back from not only the entire music scene, but even his own music. In the video explaining his journey, Sean announced that he was stepping into this new year of life with more wisdom and totally new perspectives. As he reflects back on how he was able to get to this point, Sean admitted that it took deep introspection and a few internal battles that ultimately made the difference between his mental welfare or mental warfare.

  • ‘Around this time last year – around my birthday – it was good for me, but it was wild for me too…’

Sean recalled that something felt off about his energy, and he couldn’t figure out why he was feeling so lost. To find the answers, he withdrew from the nuances of his rap lifestyle to do some soul-searching. “I just felt lost, and I didn’t know how I got there,” he said. “I’ve been meditating since I was 17 years old. That helps with anxiety, depression — all those things that I felt in my life, but it wasn’t doing it all the way for this.” Sean said whatever he was going through required “special attention” instead.

  • That special attention brought him to a new experience that helped his journey of self-discovery: therapy

“I was blessed enough to talk to some super spiritual people, and they made me realize one thing I was missing in my life,” he said. “And one thing I was missing was clarity.” That included clarity about his own circle and Sean’s happy place—his music. But the music, which he once considered an escape, felt more like a burden during this time. Sean said he had several toxic relationships surrounding him as well, and unfortunately, it bled into his relationship with his mother. “Even the relationship with my mom was like getting to a point where we wasn’t talking like that,” he said. “And it was just weird because it had never been like that with me and her.” Sean realized in these moments that he’d need to solve the issue within himself to mend those relationships, and “most importantly nurture the relationship with himself.”

  • ‘I started realizing that you can’t give or depend on someone for love or a good time and all that if you can’t give it to yourself,’ Sean continued…

Thus, he began doing more things solo, like skydiving and other activities that helped him along his path to self-discovery. He allowed himself to be the source of the replenished energy he needed, the I Decided rapper said, and ultimately, he’s now back to making the “best music of his life.” He now understands the significance that unconditional love has on his foundation and is now ready to take on life and his career in its healthier form. “It feels good to be back at a higher level,” he concluded.

Big ups to Sean Don for the much-needed word on self-care we can all take from!
