Michael Sam to Star in Documentary Series
Oprah Winfrey has purchased the rights to a documentary series that will follow the life of Michael Sam, who became the first-openly gay player to be taken in the NFL Draft. Sam was selected with the 249th overall pick by the St. Louis Rams on Saturday.
ESPN reports that cameras for OWN network captured the historic moment of Sam receiving the call that he was drafted and the subsequent kiss he shared with his boyfriend. The smooch became an instant viral sensation on the Internet.
The working title for the series is, "The Untitled Michael Sam Project," according to the network.
"We are honored that Michael is trusting us with his private journey in this moment that has not only made history but will shape it forever," Oprah Winfrey said in a press release statement to the media, including ESPN. "I am proud of the focus on authentic storytelling in our new documentary series format. The next real-life story we follow in 'The Untitled Michael Sam Project' promises to spark valuable, important discussion on life in America today. Acceptance and illumination start here."
Sam, who already owns the second highest-selling jersey amongst NFL drafted-rookies—with only Johnny Manziel selling more—appreciates the opportunity that Winfrey is giving him through this documentary series.
"If seeing my story helps somebody else accept who they are and to go for their dreams too, that's great," Sam said in a statement. "I am thankful to Oprah for her support and excited to work together."
The next step in the documentary series is for cameras to follow Sam through Rams’ training camp as he tries to secure a roster spot on the team.
