Erick Sermon: No Place for Transgenders in Hip Hop

The legendary rapper says Bruce Jenner is "crazy" and talks Michael Sam.

Not everyone is supporting Bruce Jenner. Erick Sermon, one half of the late '80s hip hop group EPMD, feels that transgender people have no place in hip hop. When asked by TMZ if the community would accept someone like Jenner, Sermon quickly replied, "No."

REMEMBERING TRANSGENDER PEOPLE OF COLOR |

''The way the world is going you never know," Sermon explains. "We have some rappers who are also close to that...who are taking the culture way too far," he adds, without mentioning any names. After straying off course into what is real and fake in hip hop, Sermon is asked if he thinks it will be an acceptable thing in hip hop in 5 to 10 years. In response, Sermon compares Jenner to openly gay football player Michael Sam, who was effectively frozen out of the NFL since coming out.
Sermon goes on to congratulate Jenner for helping potentially prevent other transgender people commit suicide, but then blasts him for the timing of his announcement, stating that he waited too long to do it — as if the way society and Jenner's own family would have perceived such news four, three or even one decade ago didn't factor into the decision.
Erick Sermon should know that transgenders are part of American life. Ignorance or fear should not be a reason why there is "no place" for trans men and women, especially those who are born and raised in hip hop culture.
