Tutu Released From Hospital, No New Malignancy

Retired Archbishop Desmond Tutu's foundation says the anti-apartheid hero was released from a hospital in Cape Town on Monday following five days of successful treatment for a persistent infection.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Retired Archbishop Desmond Tutu's foundation says the anti-apartheid hero was released from a hospital in Cape Town on Monday following five days of successful treatment for a persistent infection.

The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation said a battery of tests to determine the underlying cause of the infection, and its persistence, uncovered no new malignancy.

It said doctors will continue to manage the 81-year-old archbishop's prostate cancer.

In the meantime, the foundation said Tutu will spend some quiet time at home in Cape Town to recover his trademark sparkle.

Tutu was a vigorous campaigner against the system of white racist rule known as apartheid, which ended when democratic elections were held in 1994.
