Mariah Carey Shares Her Approach to Judging American Idol

Mimi pulls from her past experiences as a producer, songwriter and singer.

After Sunday's American Idol season 12 auditions, Mariah Carey officially began her role as a judge for the hit reality competition. Carey shared the type of advice that she's dishing out to potential contestants and how she's not simply addressing them as a famous singer to The Hollywood Reporter.

"I'm a producer and I'm a songwriter, and I look at myself as a singer as kind of third. But I look at these kids as though we're in the studio producing a record. And if I feel they should have done something a certain way, I'll say, 'You can try this, you can try this,' only in a constructive way, to sort of be a guide and someone to give them guidance rather than, like, judging somebody," the veteran artist explained.

With rumors still swirling that Mimi is feuding with Nicki Minaj, Idol host Ryan Seacrest explained that the show has "two very different, strong, powerful successful women on the panel" and that there is never a "dull moment." However, at the end of the day, he also said that everyone laughs, hugs and goes home. Mariah weighed in that she is taking her relationship with Nicki day by day.

"You know what, I think the whole thing is gonna be an experience that unfolds each day. But it's cool, I'm glad to be there," said the R&B diva.

She seemingly has a positive outlook on the show, and is ready for whatever this new season may bring.
