Colin Kaepernick Shares Video To Mark Three-Year Anniversary Of Kneeling During Anthem
Three years ago, Colin Kaepernick transitioned from sitting during the national anthem to kneeling and began a movement of bringing awareness to social injustice in America.
On Wednesday (August 14), the 31-year-old former San Francisco 49ers quarterback shared a video compilation showing police brutality, family members crying out in reaction, and demanding change. As a narrator in the video, Kaep vowed to continue the “fight for liberation.”
“Today marks the three year anniversary of the first time I protested systemic oppression,” he wrote in the caption. “I continue to work and stand with the people in our fight for liberation, despite those who are trying to erase the movement!”
“The movement has always lived with the people!” Kaepernick added.
The post comes just after Jay-Z announced his decision to partner with the NFL. The rap legend’s collaboration will reportedly be an effort to “enhance the NFL’s live game experiences and to amplify the league’s social justice efforts,” according to a league statement.
Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label will also be a part of the agreement and “will advise on the selection of artists for major NFL performances like the Super Bowl.”
Hov did encounter some criticism for the NFL partnership, perhaps most notably from Kaepernick’s girlfriend, Nessa Diab, who claimed Jay did not speak with Colin prior to inking the deal.
“THIS is a lie,” Diab wrote on Twitter. “COLIN never spoke to JAY-Z and NFL ahead of that deal being done. They NEVER included him in any discussion.”
Eric Reid, Kaepernick’s former teammate, also criticized the rapper/businessman for trying to “bury” Colin’s NFL career.
According to USA Today, Colin Kaepernick has officially been out of work for 889 days as of August 7 since leaving the 49ers in March 2017. A year later, he filed a collusion grievance lawsuit against the NFL, which was eventually settled out of court.
