Ayanna Pressley To Launch Brett Kavanaugh Impeachment Resolution
U.S. Representative Ayanna Pressley has introduced a resolution to impeach embattled Supreme Court Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh on Tuesday.
The impeachment inquiry comes on the heels of two new reports accusing Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct in the 1980s while enrolled at Yale University.
It's "our responsibility to collectively affirm the dignity and humanity of survivors,” Pressley said in a statement. "Sexual predators do not deserve a seat on the nation's highest court and Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation process set a dangerous precedent. We must demand justice for survivors and hold Kavanaugh accountable for his actions.”
The New York Times published an article with two reports of Kavanugh’s alleged misconduct, including one from Deborah Ramirez who accused Kavanaugh of removing his pants and thrusting his genitals at her during a party without her consent. The article, which included excerpts from their book, The Education of Brett Kavanaugh: An Investigation, also had allegations that Kavanaugh’s friends pushed his penis inside the hand of a female student.
Christine Blasey Ford was the first to publicly accuse Kavanaugh of sexual assault during his confirmation hearing last September. During four hours of testimony, the 52-year-old claimed Kavanaugh and his friend, Mark Judge, forced her into a bedroom during a high school party while Kavanaugh held her down and tried to remove her clothes. At only 15 years old, Ford alleges Kavanaugh placed his hand over her mouth to prevent her from screaming. Kavanaugh fiercely denied all allegations.
Despite Ford’s raw testimony, Kavanaugh was voted into the Supreme Court by a close Senate vote, 50- 48. He took the oath of office on October 6, 2018.
Jumpstarting the process to impeach the Washington, D.C. native, Pressley’s resolution would launch an impeachment inquiry while creating a special task force to investigate Kavanaugh’s accuser’s claims. The House Judiciary Committee would also be granted subpoena power.
Four Democratic presidential candidates, including former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, Sen. Kamala Harris and Sen. Elizabeth Warren all support Kavanaugh’s impeachment.
