PREVIOUS: Vince Staples is very fond of Lil Bow Wow, who made quite an impact with “Bounce With Me” during the early 2000s.

“Lil Bow Wow is one of my favorite rappers ever, you can never take that from me,” he tells TIME.

So Staples is fond of the 2000s. But unlike the rest of us who put the ‘90s on a pedestal, he doesn’t think the decade deserves that much credit.

Vince backed up his claim that the ‘90s were overrated with his view on nostalgia. First, Vince explained he was born in 1993, but he has never listened to a Backstreet Boys, N’ Sync or Spice Girls song. Later on, he feels the ‘90s made a bunch of advances — like dial-up Internet and the golden era of Biggie and 'Pac in hop hop for example — but doesn’t think it deserves any more credit. But his understanding of nostalgia is a bit more practical.

“Whatever you were watching or listening to when you were young is always going to be your favorite thing because it made you what you are today,” he tells Time. “That’s always going to be something that you appreciate the most, so that’s everyone’s favorite era.”
