Dr. Dre's New Album Is Happening Now
And you thought even Dre himself forgot about Dre.
This weekend, the billionaire Beats producer finally revealed the change we've all been waiting to hear via his revolutionary new radio show, The Pharmacy. He announced that his much-anticipated album-formerly-known-as-Detox now has a release date.
August 7, 2015, he said.
That's in less than a week.
"This show has been dedicated to Eazy M****f***king E," Dre mentioned, after the announcement. "Without him wouldn't be able to do any of this... real talk, I love you."
As for his previous music, the music he's been storing in his vault all these years, the music that reportedly sprang a leak in 2014, and had been completed as long ago as 2008, “I didn’t like it,” Dre explained. “I don’t think I did a good enough job.”
It's difficult to even fathom that one of the most prolific to ever successfully do it didn't do a good enough job. But perhaps after more than 15 years, any 2001 follow-up would seem stale.
He seems inspired again by the upcoming release of the NWA biopic, Straight Outta Compton.
"This is a snapshot of American culture... a snapshot of American history," said the film's director F. Gary Gray, who was also in the building for The Pharmacy Saturday.
"We want more of these," added Ice Cube. "We want more of these movies that tell our story right."
Good thing Dre's new album, though it's not Detox is so Compton, it's called, Compton: A Soundtrack By Dr. Dre.
The tracklisting, which was also circulated includes local OGs Cube and Snoop Dogg, both of whom had Dre's hand in shaping their careers, as well as newcomer Kendrick Lamar, and favorites from around the world of hip hop, like Eminem, Jill Scott, Marsha Ambrosius, Jon Connor, BJ The Chicago Kid, and more. There are 16 songs in total, the last of which is an effort all Dre's own, titled, "Talking To My Diary."
Straight Outta Compton, which Dre aslo produced, hits theatres August 15.
