Raekwon, Ghostface Killah Reveal Purple Tape Files Documentary
Raekwon and Ghostface Killah were “politicking, shaking hands, kissing babies, and all that” this weekend at the Sundance Film Festival. The Wu-Tang Clan MCs made their way to Park City, Utah, to reveal the Purple Tape Files documentary, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Rae’s Only Built for Cuban Linx... debut.
Along with previewing a seven-minute trailer followed by a Q&A, Rae and Ghostface spoke more about the project with Complex. “It’s about the people being able to get all the answers that they wanted when they heard this album,” explained The Chef. “We [were] in our prime, so getting that shot to really impress the world with your music, we didn’t think it’d be embraced so hard like this. And 20 years later, it’s time for you to see this film.”
The new doc is a fan collaboration of sorts. Like TLC’s Kickstarter campaign, the Purple Tape Files is turning to the public for donations. Crowd funding is a way to keep the story aligned with their vision, Rae said. “We wanted to do it organic, not havin’ somebody come and tell us what they think we should do. It costs money to make it the way we wanna make it.”
