Essence sure knows how to kick off the spring season. The magazine has nabbed not one, but three beautiful sensations to grace separate covers for its May issue. Solange Knowles, Erykah Badu and Ledisi are rocking some bold colors on their respective covers and opening up on learning to love their natural beauty.
Ledisi, who's known for her luscious locks said she doesn't place too much of her worth on her hair and instead uses it as another accessory to tell a story.
"Although I'm known for my long, colorful locsk, I still don't take my hair too seriously. I experiment a lot, dyeing it and constantly switching styles to grab attention. My hair is one of my best accessories and changing it helps express who I am," she said.
Badu, on the other hand, talked about her style evolution and how her look is nothing deeper than just an art form of sorts.
"I view my hair and clothes as functional art. I'm my own stylist and I love it, but I am not trying to make a statement."
Knowles is one who has no problem trailblazing when it comes to style. The musician is often applauded for her pattern-mixing ensembles as she is for her music.
"We all have the option of how we want to express ourselves through our life, hair, style or whatever we decide. We shouldn't be pigeonholed into any one category," Knowles explained.
