Vogue Italia Spotlights Natural Hair Trend
Natural hair is turning heads both on the street and from the runway and Vogue Italia has taken notice. In a recent article, writer Marjon Carlos talks about models like Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks, whose hair and scalps have been severely damaged due to mishandling by stylists and harsh products and the benefits that this surge in natural hair models could bring for others.
“It is uplifting to see the newest pack of Black models storming the catwalks in full embrace of their natural hairstyles, from cropped Afros, flat tops, to buzzed scalps — and in turn being embraced by the industry that has typically approached Black hair with skepticism and harsh critique,” Marjon writes.
Models like Alek Wek and Noemi Lenoir and DJ Solange Knowles have helped make natural hair fashionable while greater availability for natural hair products have made the switch more manageable for many.
“One can’t help to argue that such a general upsurge in visibility surrounding natural Black hairstyles, if they be worn by fashion darlings Julia Sarr-Jamois or Solange Knowles, or are documented thoroughly by the press, is helping usher in a new era of hair treatment for Black women broadly, and Black models specifically,” Marjon continues.
Hopefully this will not only lead to a better understanding of how to treat and style natural hair both during fashion shows and at home, but also a greater acceptance that natural can also be beautiful.
