Jeezy Explains Why Gucci Mane’s Disrespect Didn’t Get To Him In Their Verzuz
Following the relatively tense Verzuz match that Jeezy shared with Gucci Mane last week, Jeezy has revealed what kept him from getting into a confrontation with the rapper when things threatened to get out of hand.
Speaking with Big Boy, Jeezy explained what kept him poised when Gucci Mane started playing diss records to, presumably, throw him off balance.
“I just felt like I wasn’t going to lose my cool,” he said. “I wasn’t going [to] let anyone, including myself, drag me back 20 years. I worked so hard to get in a place where things are good for me. I got multiple things going on, I employ a lot of people, and everybody depends on me. Matter of fact, I got a daughter that I love very much. I got to make it back home to her.”
“I’m not putting myself in no position to prove no point to nobody that I’m real,” he continued. “I [have] been real. It’s solid, ain’t nothing ever going to change that. I don’t have anything to prove. The only thing that I gotta prove to myself is I wanna be better than I was yesterday. That would have been an L for me to walk out of there and be like, ‘Yo, I just really lost my composure out in the world because somebody was playing with me like we in the sixth grade.’”
The tense moment that he’s probably referring to is when Gucci Mane released his 2012 diss song, “Truth.” On the record, Gucci Mane raps about his 2005 self-defense killing of Jeezy’s associate Pookie Loc after what is believed to be a robbery attempt.
Following the performance of “Truth,” Gucci spoke about Pookie Loc’s killing. “Send some more and I’m going to send them back the same way — in a box back to you.”
As a response to Gucci Mane’s wild statements, Jeezy calmed things down by explaining the purpose of the Verzuz match to him. “The sh*t we came from in the street, we been through it, dawg,” he said. “Twenty years and when I said I wanted to do this for the culture, that’s what I wanted to do. I brought you here to show you the world care about what the f**k we got going on because we are the culture. Me and you, where we came from, what we been through, n**ga, us.”
The duo ended the night on a high note with a performance of their 2005 smash hit, “So Icey.”
