Paul Mooney’s Sons Speak Out About Their Father’s Sexual Abuse Allegations And Gay Rumors
Last month, bombshell accusations that legendary comedian Paul Mooney allegedly “violated” Richard Pryor’s son shocked the entertainment world.
Rashon Kahn, Pryor’s ex-bodyguard and author of a new book reportedly titled, Everything Wasn’t Funny, was the whistleblower, describing to Comedy Hype how Pryor put a hit out on the Louisiana native for $1 million after learning of the alleged assault.
Now, after weeks of speculation, Mooney’s twin sons, Dwayne and Daryl Mooney, are speaking out. In an interview with Comedy Hype, Daryl spoke about the gay rumors surrounding his father, “...When people used to ask us if our father was gay, I’d say, ‘I don’t know, he never tried to f*ck us!’ How are we supposed to know? I don’t know… that’s hearsay.”
Daryl also addressed Pryor Jr. and his appearance on TMZ.
“It comes back down to Richard Pryor Jr. Everybody else saying stuff is saying stuff. People will say all kinds of stuff. But what is he saying? If he’s not saying it, it’s not happening.”
“He said on TMZ they asked him the question and he said he didn’t want to talk about it and whatever happened to me I was 13… that [he] was underage and [it was] non-consensual,” Daryl described.
“But he didn’t mention any names,” interjected Dwayne. “Or who he was talking about,” Daryl said.
The interviewer went on to mention how the TMZ reporter did say Mooney’s name during the exchange.
“He didn’t mention his name, you can interpret that in a variety of ways,” Daryl said.
“Until someone says, ‘I f*ck*d Paul Mooney at a certain age’ and get your timeline right- that’s what the bodyguard got to get, he got to get his timeline right so we can sit up there and talk about it and see what’s really going on,” said Dwayne.
“Then we got a case,” said Daryl.
They also addressed the impact of their father revealing he was gay, when they shut down that speculation.
“He can’t be homeosexual because he has children! That would be bisexual,” Dwayne argued. “James Baldwin was totally gay and he was one of the strongest people out here for dealing with race relations, so maybe for some conscious hotep folk they would have a problem with that. When you really look at it in these times, would it really be a big deal? I don’t think it would be a big deal.”
Daryl also noted their father’s contributions to entertainment and how his sexuality should not negate any of his success.
“But what is [his] contribution to society? Like Dick Gregory said he [Mooney] continued to journey, the evolution of Black consciousness through his comedy. Does it matter if he’s bisexual? If it matters that he’s bisexual, that means you’re homophobic. If they’re bisexual or gay, they can’t contribute to the evolution or the advancement of society? Not just talking about Paul Mooney, but overall... but right now today, it’s accepted, it’s accepted. So why [are] we tripping about someone’s sexuality?… Real fans would not care.”
Pryor Jr., who is now 61, wrote in his memoir that he came out as gay to his parents in 1981 and that his father was supportive of him.
Cassandra Williams, Mooney’s publicist, told TMZ that “there is no validity to Rashon Kahn’s statements as it relates to Mr. Mooney.”
