Jada Pinkett Smith Weighs In on Oscar Noms One Year After Calling for Boycott
Last year around this time, Jada Pinkett Smith was calling for a boycott of the Oscars because of the lack of diversity among the nominees — particularly in the acting categories. Some praised her for speaking out against her own industry while others called her out for sour grapes over the fact that her husband Will Smith failed to get a nomination for Concussion.
Well, it's a year later and boy have things changed. #OscarsSoWhite became #OscarsSoBlack and more than half a dozen "Black" films and countless Black filmmakers are nominated for Academy Awards in a multitude of categories.
Still no nomination for Will, though.
So, how does Jada feel about the Oscars this year? She shared her views with Variety.
“I feel really fantastic. It’s a beautiful thing to see,” Smith said shortly after the nominations were announced. “We had a lot of exceptional films this year. I’m glad to see that projects like Hidden Figures, Fences and Moonlight are getting recognition. I’m very proud this morning.”
She continued, “I’m very proud to be part of the artistic community today. We have a ways to go, but we’ve also come a long way. We’ve come a long way as a country, and we’re going to keep stepping.”
After her provocative call for a boycott last year, all eyes were on Jada after the nominations were announced this year. See what Twitter had to say:
