Legendary boxer Cassius Clay officially adopts the name Muhammad Ali.
After securing the world heavyweight championship the day before, Kentucky boxer Cassius Clay adopts the name Muhammad Ali. Ali announced that he had converted from Christianity to Islam and had joined the controversial Muslim sect the Nation of Islam.
