Teen Arrested In Fatal Stabbing At Parade For Mount Vernon, N.Y. High School Basketball Team
A 15-year-old was arrested Friday (April 8) in connection with a fatal stabbing outside New York City during a parade to celebrate the high school basketball championship season of the Mount Vernon Knights.
The Westchester County district attorney said the suspect, an unnamed minor, was arraigned Saturday (April 9) on felony manslaughter and attempted assault charges, NBC New York reported. Mount Vernon is a New York suburb, located just north of the city.
A 16-year-old girl died of her injuries from the attack, and a second victim, a 15-year-old girl, survived the assault and was expected to make a full recovery.
According to the New York Post, the parade started at about 11 a.m. Accompanied by a police-escorted motorcade, team members made their way through the city to Mount Vernon City Hall for a ceremony to recognize the school’s 12th state title. Along the way, a fight broke out between two groups of high school students.
When the Mount Vernon police arrived, officers found the teenage girls fighting and became aware that two of them were stabbed, hyperlocal news site Patch.com reported. One of the girls died on the way to the hospital.
"We began our day celebrating the greatness and success of our youth and we ended it with a young life that has been taken by senseless and inexcusable violence,” NBC quoted Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson Howard. “The mental emotional and spiritual health of our community especially of our children must be the priority and we must come together."
Investigators identified the suspect from video clips that captured the incident but did not immediately report a motive for the attack, NBC New York said.
A GoFundMe campaign was enacted for Green’s family and thus far, has raised nearly $23,000 of a $30,000 goal.
