Kansas City Congressional Candidate Claimed Bill Cosby Was Al Jarreau In Attempt To Smear Opponent And Failed
Kansas City Congressional candidate Maite Salazar thought she was going to pull a quick smear campaign against her opponent for Missouri’s Fifth District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Instead, she got dragged for racism, among other things.
In a January 9 tweet, Salazar claimed her opponent, seventh term Representative Emanuel Cleaver, who is Black, kept a picture of Bill Cosby underneath his desk, adding “this is not a drill.”
Well, not only was the picture not of Cosby, it was of the late great jazz musician Al Jarreau during a performance in Kansas City. It prompted Rachel R. Gonzalez, a member of the executive committee for the Missouri Democratic Party, to make the distinction and point out that “not all Black people look the same.” See below:
After leaving the tweet up for more than a day, Salazar realized the enormous blunder and issued an apology, blaming the stress of campaigning, and did not address Cleaver, whose character she tried to assassinate.
“I would like to offer my deepest apology,” she tweeted. “I made a mistake by insinuating my opponent had a picture he did not have in his office. I overstepped, when I should have left it alone. When you're when you are running a campaign of this magnitude, mistakes are made. This was an insensitive mistake.” She continued, “Again, I offer my apology. I will continue to fight for all the things are needed in the 5th district.”
Twitter wasn’t with it and continued the dragging. See what they had to say below.
