Bobbi Kristina Taken Out of Coma, Remains on Life Support
Doctors have decided to bring Bobbi Kristina Brown out of her medically-induced coma, People.com reports. The music scion will remain on life support and is still considered to be in critical condition, but her family is holding out hope for signs of recovery.
"We're all hoping and praying that this will give us some answers," a family source tells People, who adds that Brown's condition remains "severe."
The 21-year-old daughter of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown has been in a medically induced coma since January 31, when she was found unresponsive in her bathtub.
Subhashini Ramesh, a professor of NeuroCritical Care at Georgia Regents University, explains the reasoning to People. "They take them off a medically induced coma for two reasons – because the underlying problem has improved, or to simply get a sense of what the patient is able to do for themselves."
Dr. Ramesh, who is not treating Brown, says that her recent tracheostomy signifies one bit of positive news. "Obviously, she did not meet the criteria for brain death if she underwent a tracheostomy," Dr. Ramesh says. "She still could have a devastating injury, though."
Brown's family is cautiously optimistic about the future. "We're hoping for a significant change soon," says the family member, "but we know that it may not change anything."
"There will be a sign of hope, and then nothing," another source adds. "Every day, we wonder if this will be the day that we get good news."
