On Sunday, the NAACP offices in Houston’s Third Ward were visited by “White Lives Matter” demonstrators.

The protesters held Confederate flags and wore white supremacist symbols on their clothing. The organizer of the assembly, Ken Reed, explained the reason behind their visit. 

"We came out here to protest against the NAACP and their failure in speaking out against the atrocities that organizations like Black Lives Matter and other pro-Black organizations have caused the attack and killing of white police officers, the burning down of cities and things of that nature," Reed told the Houston Chronicle. "If they're going to be a civil rights organization and defend their people, they also need to hold their people accountable."

Reed, as well as other protesters, also exercised their Second Amendment right to carry a weapon. Their weapon of choice? An assault rifle.

“Obviously we're exercising our Second Amendment rights but that's because we have to defend ourselves,’’ Reed said.

The presence of the White Lives Matter protesters shocked members of the predominately Black community.

"The Confederate flag throws me off," neighborhood resident Quintina Richardson said. "You're saying Black Lives Matter is a racist organization but when you're throwing the Confederate flag up and saying White Lives Matter, are you saying you're racist?"

Richardson was not the only resident confused and offended by the protesters’ presence. Eventually, police barricaded the protesters, which drew large crowds. Around 3 p.m., police officers began to clear out the White Lives Matter group, which consisted of about 20 people.

After news of the protest spread online, the hashtag #WhiteLivesMatter started to trend on Twitter. However, when Black Twitter saw the trend, it did not take long for them to drag any supporter of the White Lives Matter group.
