iLoveMakonnen Reveals Where His Relationship Stands With Drake
It’s been over a year since the Tuesday turn-up leader iLoveMakonnen parted ways with Drake and his exclusive OVO Sound clique.
But in that whirlwind of a year for the Atlanta native, which included some tense run-ins with Drizzy and teetering statements regarding their relationship, Makonnen’s latest commentary will likely have fans asking, “What beef?”
In an interview with Rap-Up, the “Trust Me Danny” artist revealed that though he’s been under the radar since his OVO departure and coming out as gay, he’s got some new tunes for fans with Rae Sremmurd and Mike WiLL Made-It. But when it comes to his former label boss, another famed industry collaborator, he admits that he’s not even sure where their relationship stands.
“I really don’t know, at the end of the day,” he said. “It’s a lack of communication, of where it is, and I think it’s a whole bunch of misunderstandings. Things get so blown out of proportion from other people that aren’t really there.”
Makonnen suggested that the premise of their tiff actually came from the internet, the digital community notoriously known for stirring the beef pot. Let the 28-year-old Warner Bros. signee tell it now, there was never any controversy to begin with — just some simple miscommunication.
“There really is no issue with me and Drake,” he stated. “We just haven’t had communication so other people that are around that like to stir up s**t, they sort of made it seem like we have some sort of issue with each other, but it’s like, they’re them, I’m me. It’s just a lot of miscommunication.”
Besides, Makonnen added, he feels there’s been enough statements made on his behalf. His suggestion? “People need to ask OVO” about their relationship status with him considering that they’re the folks who helped foot his career.
“It’s more of a lack of communication and more people haven’t heard their side of what’s going on with Makonnen to them,” he concluded. "It was always, ‘Makonnen left OVO.’ It wasn’t, ‘How does OVO feel about that?’ It’s always just been a Makonnen-Makonnen-Makonnen thing. So, people start saying, ‘Makonnen is a hater. He’s in the OVO sweatshop.’ All of these little lies and rumors and s**t to make content online so they can get a career. That’s just the internet, but in real life, motherf**kers know Makonnen. If they ever want to talk to me, somehow, they can talk to me. But there’s no issue or no hard feelings for anybody.”
During the conversation, he also revealed that after revealing his sexuality at the kick-off of 2017, much hasn’t changed.
Put simply: everybody still loves Makonnen.
