In Case You Thought Flavor Flav Had Beef With Chuck D...
On Wednesday, many Public Enemy fans were disappointed to hear that Flavor Flav was reportedly suing Chuck D and a number of other parties over allegedly unpaid royalties. But despite the early reports on what was assumed to be a heated court feud, Flavor Flav revealed on Instagram that he still has love for his bandmate.
“#ATTENTION EVERYONE!! this is Flavor Flav speaking himself. I love my partner Chuck D everyone so don't get it twisted, we will fix it,” he wrote in a post on Instagram on Sept. 1.
Flav’s public announcement comes shortly after Chuck D responded to reports about the lawsuit on Twitter. In a series of tweets, the recording artist suggested that he wasn’t interested in getting wrapped up in the media drama. “Flav will be OK. TMZ Drama is beneath me, considering our age,” the rapper wrote. “It’s low entertainment, but I definitely like to find those 50 songs.”
The latter part of Chuck’s tweets refers to particular claims in the lawsuit, in which Flav alleged he wrote 50 songs for Public Enemy that he was not compensated for. Moreover, the suit also claims that Flav did not profit from the sales of any Public Enemy merchandise, despite the group using his image and name on a majority of the memorabilia. “Despite Drayton’s (Flav’s real name is William J. Drayton) position in Public Enemy, the group’s management and related companies have for years attempted to minimize his role in the Public Enemy business, while continuing to rely upon Drayton’s fame and persona to market the brand,” court documents obtained by Billboard read.
Even with those claims, though, Chuck D asked fans to ease off of criticizing Flav. He said people should really be pointing the finger at his management instead. "People can lighten up on Flav. It's his new mgt that vengefully felt that suing a 3rd party & connecting me was a good move for him," he tweeted.
While Flavor Flav and Chuck D don’t appear to be at war with one another, it doesn’t look as though either one is waving the white flag when it comes to the lawsuit. Chuck D’s name is listed along with a number of professionals connected to the production, management, and engineering of Public Enemy’s career. Flav is reportedly suing for an undisclosed amount, and the payment will reportedly be determined by a judge when the case goes to trial.
