Mother Of 6-Year-Old Virginia Boy Who Shot Teacher Pleads Guilty To State Charge

Deja Taylor says she ‘feels very responsible’ for her son’s actions.

Deja Taylor, the mother of the Virginia 6-year-old boy who used her gun to shoot his teacher at school,  pleaded guilty Tuesday (Aug. 15) to a state charge of felony child neglect, CBS News reports.

After the hearing, Taylor’s lawyer James Ellenson said the 26-year-old mom “feels very responsible, feels very bad” about what happened. Police said the child shot Abby Zwerner with a 9 mm handgun in their Richneck Elementary School classroom in Newport News on Jan. 6, striking the teacher in the left hand and upper torso.

Zwerner, who had multiple surgeries, was released from Riverside Regional Medical Center about 10 days after the shooting, The Virginian-Pilot reported.

Ellenson said he hoped the judge would take into consideration during sentencing that Taylor was a domestic abuse victim who suffered postpartum depression after several miscarriages before the shooting.

CNN reports that Taylor faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison on the felony child neglect charge. But prosecutors have said they will not ask the judge for a punishment beyond the sentencing guidelines of six months under her plea agreement, which includes Taylor’s previous guilty plea to federal gun charges.

Reading specialist Amy Kovac and several children immediately fled the classroom after the shooting. Kovac told the police she returned and found the boy and the gun nearby on the floor. She restrained him until the police arrived.

The child said, "I shot that b**** dead,"  and that he “got my mom’s gun last night,” Kovac told investigators.

Taylor told police that she installed a trigger lock on her weapon, which she usually stored in her purse or a lockbox. However, federal agents reported that they couldn’t find a trigger lock or a lockbox during their search of her home.

Taylor told ABC News’ Good Morning America in May that her son suffers from ADHD, which she believes may have played a role in the shooting.

The family had previously released a statement saying he was under a care plan at school that required a parent to accompany him each day to class. “The week of the shooting was the first week when we were not in class with him,” the statement read.

According to Taylor, school officials decided that family members no longer needed to be present in the classroom because her son started taking medication and was meeting his academic goals.

Taylor said her son liked his teacher but felt that she wasn’t listening to him in the days before the shooting.

“I will say that week he felt he was being ignored,” Taylor stated. She said he told her, “Mom, I don’t think she was listening to me. I don’t like that.”

The child is now in the custody of his grandfather.
