Jimmy Iovine Says He's Sorry for Presumptuous Comments About Women
Apple Music’s Jimmy Iovine, who co-founded Interscope Records and later Beats By Dre, recently made questionable comments about women’s tendencies and their ability to find music.
He wants to clear that up though and recently issued a statement rebutting the earlier remarks he made on yesterday’s airing of CBS This Morning.
"We created Apple Music to make finding the right music easier for everyone — men and women, young and old,” he stated. “Our new ad focuses on women, which is why I answered the way I did, but of course the same applies equally for men. I could have chosen my words better, and I apologize."
Originally, Iovine made comments that seemed to imply women were simple-minded when it comes to music and technology, which he says he felt he could exploit. Appearing on the morning program, alongside Mary J. Blige, he relayed why Apple Music could solve their problems.
"I always knew that women find it very difficult at times — some women — to find music. And this helps makes it easier with playlists, curated by real people," he attempted to explain when asked about Apple Music’s latest ad featuring Blige, Kerry Washington and Taraji P. Henson. "I just thought of a problem: Girls are sitting around talking about boys. Or complaining about boys, when they have their heart broken or whatever. And they need music for that, right? It’s hard to find the right music. Not everybody knows a DJ."
After catching heat via social media and other avenues, show host Gayle King came to Iovine’s defense on Twitter saying his comments were taken out of context and encouraged critics to watch the full interview segment.
