Berry Gordy Working on Big Budget Broadway Play
Sources close to the legendary Motown Records founder say he’s been quietly working with former Universal Music CEO Doug Morris and Rent producer Kevin McCollum on the story of his life for Broadway. Apparently, it will be set against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and will feature a score of Motown classics. Gordy has his eyes set on a whooping $100 million budget.
The source told the New York Post, "Berry's been wanting to do this for a long time. He's got the money and investors lined up. "He's trying to involve Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson." As of now, there’s no timetable for the production. For Gordy, this Broadway play will be his way of setting the record straight about his life and business dealings.
In related Gordy news, the Page Six article has said it’s Gordy holding up production on each of the Marvin Gaye films in development. Gordy owns much of the material needed to make a biopic about the fallen soul crooner, but the source says, "And he's been quietly blocking the scripts and music because he doesn't want his name dragged through the mud."
