Tyler, the Creator and Sexyy Red Stan an HBCU Band ‘Sticky’ Cover
While Tyler, the Creator's new album, Chromakopia, continues to dominate the Billboard 200, a song from the LP has received an HBCU band tribute.
Last Saturday, November 16, the Jackson State Tigers’ Sonic Boom of the South performed a live rendition of the Tyler, Sexyy Red, GloRilla and Lil Wayne collaboration “Sticky.” The Tigers were playing against the Alabama State Hornets, whose Mighty Marching Hornets performed “In the Sanctuary” by Kurt Carr. While the team won 16-10, they also scored big on social media.
On Sunday, November 17, Tyler and Sexyy reacted to the performance just after bringing “Sticky” to the latest installment of Camp Flog Gnaw in Los Angeles.
“THIS IS WHY I MADE STICKY!!!!!!” Tyler enthusiastically reacted in a repost of the Sonic Boom show. “THIS IS WHY I ARRANGED IT THAT WAY. THIS BEAUTIFUL MY HEART IS FILLED.”
Sexyy also shared the video, writing, “This is so raw!!”
Also contributing background vocals on the song is Solange, who previously linked with Tyler on songs “I Think” and “The Boy Is a Gun” from Tyler’s 2019 album Igor and “Down With the Clique” from Solange’s When I Get Home released the same year.
On the same day, Tyler reacted to the Tigers’ performance and celebrated his Chromakopia homecoming performance at CFG.
“STCHROMA RAHTAHTAH NOID DARLING I STICKY MASKOFF DEAD LIKE HIM ALL WENT OFF THANK YOU FOR THAT LAST NIGHT WHATTTTT,” he wrote on X.
The album, Tyler’s eighth LP, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 upon its October 28th release. Although the rapper intentionally scheduled his release date for a Monday instead of the traditional Fridays, it moved 142,000 in pure album sales.
