Marvel Recruits Ta-Nehisi Coates to Pen Black Panther Comic Series

Marvel has enlisted author Ta-Nehisi Coates to pen a new series of Black Panther comics that will begin next spring.

Ta-Nehisi Coates is one of the most prominent intellectual voices in writing today. He recently received nods from iconic author Toni Morrison, who read his latest book Between the World and Me and proclaimed that his work filled the literary void left by James Baldwin's death. What an honor to be bestowed on any writer.
The national correspondent for The Atlantic can now add comic book author to his list of growing accomplishments, The New York Times reports. Marvel announced Tuesday that he will be penning a new series of the Black Panther comic. Black Panther debuted in 1966 and was the first Black superhero.
Coates, who is an avid fan of comic books from childhood, connected with the comic book house after interviewing Marvel editor Sana Amanat about inclusion in May. Marvel then began working with Coates on the story soon after.
In the new installment of the comic series, the Black Panther will face a terrorist group called "The People," who have stirred up a violent uprising in his country. “It’s going to be a story that repositions the Black Panther in the minds of readers,” Axel Alonso, the editor in chief of Marvel, told The New York Times. “It really moves him forward.”
