Jerry Jones is one of the most hands-on, controversial owners in all of sports. He also seems to be one of the most forgiving.

The longtime Dallas Cowboys owner told the Dallas Morning News on Monday that he would create a roster spot on the team for former Cowboys player Josh Brent if the defensive tackle is reinstated.

“We wouldn’t have it today but we would make a roster spot,” Jones told the newspaper.

Brent was notoriously convicted of intoxication manslaughter for the December 2012 car crash that killed friend and teammate Jerry Brown Jr. Brent served 180 days in jail and is on 10 years of probation. He was released this past June and allowed to spend the remaining 45 days of his sentence in rehabilitation.

Brent is scheduled to meet with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday in seeking league reinstatement. Brent’s agent told the Dallas Morning News that the defensive tackle, now 26, would like to continue his NFL career if the Cowboys would have him back.

“No one has shown more remorse than Josh,” said David Wells, a former bail bondsman who has worked with troubled Cowboys before Brent, to the Dallas Morning News. “He is genuine and he has gone above everything required of him.”

Brent has also reportedly spent time with former troubled Cowboys like Michael Irvin and Nate Newton.

Brent retired from the NFL in July 2013 and hasn’t played in the league since 2012.
