Watch: The Swag Surf Officially Made It to the White House Lawn
Right now, there is an incredible video of a group of people doing the swag surf on the White House lawn. At first glance, it may appear that the video is just a fun representation of how cool President Obama is. However, after some careful research, it’s clear that the dance that occurred on the South Lawn is creating a movement larger than we know.
Yesterday, the White House held its music and activism event, South by South Lawn (a take on South by Southwest). The festival included inspirational talks, music and a noteworthy discussion about climate change moderated by President Obama, Leonardo DiCaprio and Katharine Hayhoe.
However, the moment that has everyone realizing how truly cool our president is occurred when Jason Mowatt, the creator of Million Swag Surf, and several individuals did the swag surf on the lawn.
Million Swag Surf is a movement with the goal of bringing awareness to bone marrow cancer. According to Mowatt, there are about 560,000 African-Americans on the national bone marrow registry and his goal is to raise that number to a million.
Although Million Swag Surf is a charitable cause, it’s certainly very different from the usual non-profit organizations that past presidents have hosted. It’s incredible that President Obama allowed such an innovative and relevant movement to be a part of his festival.
For the last time Mr. President, please don’t go!
