At this point in his career, Lil Yachty is a seasoned professional when it comes to not paying attention to what his haters (often older hip-hop heads) have to say about his music.

After admitting in an interview that he can't name five Tupac songs, the rapper was met with all sorts of criticism, some even calling into question his roots and how he was raised.

In a recent video interview, his father, Shannon McCollum, defends his son's honor, saying that his son isn't making music to win over the approval of older fans of rap music.

During the clip, McCollum says that the music his son making is geared towards attracting a fan base his own age, and that Lil Yachty's brand of rap is created by a teenager, made for teenage listeners.

"I would say to the older cats, because I'm an older cat, first off, I would say, it's not for you," his father says. "He calls himself king of the teens, not the king of the ole' heads, ya dig? It's not for you, it's for your kids. Let your kids rock with it."

He also excuses his son for not understanding the origins of hip-hop, saying that it comes with the territory of being a fresh high school graduate, while others firmly hold the argument that not knowing the history of the culture he's contributing to is inexcusable. His father also says that he, being older, doesn't know any of 21 Savage's songs because he's not really supposed to. He also adds that most people his son's age don't know the origins of hip-hop either.

At the end of the day, Lil Yachty was born in 1997, making him freshly 19 years old, and he's still accomplishing important career milestones regardless of his critics.
