J. Cole Debuts "Power Trip" Video With Miguel
An intense love obsession has driven J. Cole to a dark place. The Roc Nation MC premiered the music video for his "Power Trip" single today and the ending to the moody visual will leave many fans stunned.
The video, which was shot in Cole’s hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina, finds the lovesick rapper in a one-sided love affair aching for the attention of an unaware beauty. R&B crooner Miguel serves as a chief obstacle to that love being reciprocated as the beau to Cole’s dream girl. After a night of "constant drinking and love songs" at the strip club, Cole and a friend find themselves posted up outside the girl’s house. Inside, Miguel prepares for a day at work, but not before saying goodbye to his woman. Let’s just say that farewell could be his last.
In a press release about the music video’s premiere Cole joked, "No R&B singers were harmed during the making of this video."
While the storyline in the "Power Trip" video takes a mean turn, J. Cole hatched the plot for the song’s concept four years ago with "Dreams," a track featured on his 2009 mixtape, The Warm Up. Back then Cole just fantasized of murdering the boyfriend of a girl he longed for.
Cole served as creative director for the video, which was co-directed by Nabil and Mike Piscitelli. If you want to hear Cole offer more creative insight about the new video tune into BET's 106 & Park on Wednesday April 10 to catch the Roc Nation rapper make an appearance.
Cole’s sophomore album, Born Sinner, is set for release on June 25.
