Michelle Obama: Oscars Backlash is "Not Surprising"
Michelle Obama isn't one to let haters get her down.
The first lady, who appeared via satellite to present the award for Best Picture at the Academy Awards telecast last month, responded to conservative critics who claim her participation in Hollywood's biggest night was inappropriate and "upstaged" the celeb nominees.
Obama said the national conversation sparked by her Oscars appearance is "absolutely not surprising," and that this kind of intense scrutiny of her every move is now "part of the culture."
"Shoot, my bangs set off a national conversation. My shoes can set off a national conversation. That's just sort of where we are. We've got a lot of talking going on," she joked during an appearance in Chicago. "It's like everybody's kitchen-table conversation is now accessible to everybody else so there's a national conversation about anything."
Hollywood's love for the Obamas is no new thing, with celebs frequently visiting the White House and donating large sums of money to the two presidential campaigns. Perhaps the nameless "conservative critics" of their A-list connections are a wee bit jealous?
