After watching his mother get gunned down by a carjacker, an 8-year-old Missouri boy helped his two younger siblings hide from danger.

According to The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 28-year-old Porsha Owens was killed Monday morning in Castle Point while she was walking her children to the car before driving them to daycare. In the process, a man attempted to carjack Owens and fatally shot her.

Owens' grandmother Fannie King said her great grandson told her what occurred during the attempted robbery. The boy said the gunman ordered his mother to give him her money and the keys to the car before shooting her.

When the gunman couldn't get the car to start, he fled. The boy then help his younger siblings hide under the car while he ran for help.

King told the local paper her grandson found a police officer and waited by his mother's side until an ambulance arrived.

Owens was found with at least one gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. She later died from her injuries, reported KMOV.

King said Owens' other two children are a 3-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl.

"I talked to the children," King told the paper. "The two smaller ones, they don't comprehend she's not coming back. The older one, he knows."

In a statement on Facebook, the Riverview Gardens School District where Owens worked as a safety guard described Owens as a treasured community member who "worked diligently to build positive relationships with scholars and staff."

A GoFundMe account has been set up for donations for Owens’ children.
