Attack On Black FedEx Driver Was 'Copycat' Of Arbery Shooting, Lawyer Says
Two Mississippi white men, a father and a son, were charged earlier this week after reportedly chasing and firing shots at 24-year-old D’Monterrio Gibson, a Black FedEx delivery driver who was in the middle of his route in the Brookhaven neighborhood.
Gibson’s attorney, Carlos E. Moore, called it a “copycat” crime, comparing it to the February 2020 shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery, according to the Washington Post.
“These people tried to be copycats, and that’s why we need full justice, not Mississippi justice,” Moore said. “This man went to work, and they attacked him like he was a wild animal.”
A father and son chased and killed Arbery, with the assistance of a neighbor, who was jogging in a Georgia neighborhood. The father and son (Travis and Greg McMichael) were sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole, while William “Roddie'' Bryan was sentenced to life with a chance of parole.
Gibson, 24, was out on a delivery route on January 24, when two men chased his unmarked van in their pickup truck. This chase lasted seven minutes and they fired at the van at least five times, attorneys stated in Thursday’s (Feb. 10) press conference.
Brandon Case, 35, was charged with assault and weapon charges and his father, Gregory Case, 58, faced conspiracy charges. They were reportedly released on bond, just one day after turning themselves in (Feb. 1) and being charged and a week following the shooting incident. Brandon Case’s bond: $150,000 while his father’s was $75,000.
In April, the case is expected to be held in front of a grand jury. Gibson plans on filing a lawsuit against the Cases.
