DMX Dislikes Drake, Not Impressed By Rick Ross
DMX made an appearance at Power 105's Breakfast Club this morning, and the dawg didn't bite his tongue on issues ranging from his fall-out with Def Jam under Jay-Z to his disdain for a certain Young Money superstar from Canada.
X said he believes in being candid, as is evidenced by his 2006 BET reality show DMX: Soul of a Man and his memorable Vh1 Behind The Music special.
"It was honest," he said. "A lot of people are afraid of honesty. They're afraid to show who they are because they think it makes them look weak. But we all have flaws, man. Anyone who tries to say that they don't, well, we know what they're full of."
X, whose seventh studio album Undisputed is due in March on Fontana Distribution, revisited the issues he had with his former label, Def Jam, where he released five number-one albums between 1998 and 2003. He recounted the story of how his music got shelved once Jay-Z took over at the label as president.
"When he first got the job, he called me and was like 'Yo dog, the inmates is running the building! You good!,' he said. "But then I finished the album, shot the video and ... [nothing]. I was like 'What happened?' and people are telling me 'Well, we don't know.' [So I say] 'Whatchu mean 'We don't know?!' How do you listen to a whole album, pick the single, shoot the video and then all of a sudden, you don't know? Oh, I see what's going on: You're trying to eliminate the competition."
Addressing Def Jam's rationale at the time that they declined to move forward with the album because he was on drugs, DMX disagreed.
"The album was already recorded, the video was already shot and everything. He was just getting rid of the competition," he claimed.
As far as his opinions on the dominant hip hop artists of today, such as Rick Ross, DMX said he wasn't impressed, and poked fun at the Maybach Music boss's lyrical content. (He also said he was offered a meeting with the label but turned it down because he "just couldn't see it.")
"He just talks about eatin' too much. How much can one n***a eat?!" he joked at Ross. "Maybach this, Austin Martin that. OK, we get it!"
But the Yonkers native saved the bulk of his ire for Drake. Asked whether he liked the 25-year-old crossover talent, X didn't mince his words.
"No," he said flatly, before being pushed to elaborate. "I don't like anything about Drake. I don't like his voice, I don't like the sh*t he talks about, I don't like his face, I don't like the way he walks, I don't like his haircut, just nothing."
DMX said he wasn't worried about fitting into today's hip hop landscape, despite having been absent from the scene for nearly six years.
"I am hip hop," he said confidently. "Which is not to say that I'm all of it, but I am hip hop."
DMX is playing a concert at SOBs in New York tonight, and Undefeated is slated to hit stores March 27.
